AFFR x RAVB

Architectuur Film Festival Rotterdam x RAVB

College Filosofie

Met docent Katrijn de Vrande bezoek aan de film Sleepless Birds (45′) – Electricity changes how we experience the world, for better or for worse. This programme reveals both the beauty and the downside of our electricity consumption, from vibrant nightlife to the changing biorhythms of birds.

Voorafgaand lezen studenten de tekst ‘Leven als een vogel’ van Vinciane Despret.

STUDIO 1: BUILDING WITH HEMP AND LIME:

At the Garden’s Pace (68′) –– A meditative look at the construction process of the new pavilion in the Pinetum Blijdenstein Botanical Gardens in Hilversum, by Rotterdam-based architect Enzo Valerio and his team.

Totem & Veins (48′) – Two architects and two quarries. For one, the quarry is a source of construction materials, for the other a sculptural landscape with architectural qualities.

STUDIO 5: THE (UN)COMMON ROOM

STUDIO 6: PLATFORM WOONOPGAVE

STUDIO 4: MET ZORG ONTWERPEN

27 Storeys  (82′) – Two films about women who return to the social housing complexes where they grew up, which to them symbolize community and solidarity. While one of them rediscovers the utopian building of her youth, the other finds an unrecognizable place.

A Home on every floor

Living Together: The Story of De Warren (75′) Living Together: The Story of De Warren follows a group of young people during the establishment of a housing cooperative that aims to be sustainable, social, and affordable. The project is ambitious: it is the first of its kind in the Netherlands, and none of the young housing pioneers have ever built a house before.

Rotterdam Special: Housing Crisis vs Housing Quality – Can a housing crisis offer room for innovation? Accompanied by three short movies, a panel discussion led by Karim Ouri will address desired living qualities of new types of intergenerational households and collective housing.

STUDIO 8: M4H, RUIMTE VOOR COLLECTIEVE ONTWIKKELING

FERNAND POUILLON, FRANCE’S MOST WANTED ARCHITECT  (52′) – During the post-war years, the French architect and developer Pouillon realized millions of square metres of social housing. Using simple construction methods, he succeeded in building affordable and good-quality housing but, along the way, he made many enemies among French developers.

STUDIO 9: BIOREGIONAAL ONTWERPEN VOOR ZEELAND

Sleepless Birds (45′) – Electricity changes how we experience the world, for better or for worse. This programme reveals both the beauty and the downside of our electricity consumption, from vibrant nightlife to the changing biorhythms of birds.

The Genius of the Place: The life and work of Geoffrey Bawa (80′) – Bawa is the Sri Lankan forefather of Tropical Modernism. His architecture exists in harmony with nature, culture and climate, and has become part of the modern Sri Lankan identity.

Green over Gray. Emilio Ambasz (55′)  – Two films about the importance of nature in a programme with a touching love letter to a centuries-old tree, followed by a portrait of an architect who puts greenery first, often literally.

STUDIO 11: B(S)XL, THE CITY AS A RESOURCE
